  • Title: Traditional Practices And Beliefs In Newborn Care Among Tribal People Of Sundargarh District,

Abstract

The district of Sundargarh is situated in western pat of Odisha state in east India. The district has approximately 2093000 population of which 51% are tribal. The literacy rate is nearly 70 % in the overall population.

Between 2003 to 2010   trained field workers in the block of Lathikata and Kuarmunda  made 4000 house visits to enquire about  and supervise the health status of newborn babies(day 1 to day 59) and noted the traditional practices in care of newborn. These notes have been picked up from records maintained by health workers, from group discussions on newborn care and specific observations by anwanwadi workers (awws) employed by Women and Community Development Department.

Belief's and practices(band p) were mostly elaborated by mothers or some senior ladies as care givers. They were grouped in two ways,  maternal practices and effect on newborn and b and p during newborn care.

Objective of collecting such facts was to educate the community about the hazards of faulty p & b that prolongs child sickness and threatens child survival.
